It’s not exactly Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, but this 1998 entry, starring Vanessa Williams and newcomer Chayanne offers its own terpsichorean pleasures. The story centers on Rafael Infante (Chayanne), a Cuban emigre to Texas, where he takes a menial job at a local dance studio run by John Burnett (Kris Kristofferson). There, he falls for Ruby Sinclair (Vanessa Williams), a one-time ballroom championship contender looking for the opportunity to compete for the title once more. The romance seems a foregone conclusion but has some snap thanks to a crisp performance by Williams and a sunny (if limited) one by Chayanne, a singing star in Purto Rico. Best of all is the dancing itself. In terms of both energy, exuberance, and style, this film’s dance sequnces rank with the best of the decade’s limited celebration of the kinetic art, such as Strictly Ballroom and Shall We Dance. Though the movie’s central plot secret seems obvious from the first downbeat, the film takes off every time the dance music kicks in. –Marshall Fine

Director Jack Hill, a protege of the original schlockmeister, Roger Corman, knew his way around a low budget and a shocking subject. Women-in-prison films were nothing new in 1971, but The Big Doll House had it all–sex, violence, nudity, a sadistic guard, and a sexually frustrated warden–and served it up with an abundance of cheapjack energy and tongu-in-cheek humor. The beauty of Hill’s movies lay in the way they could appeal not only to the hordes who would go see them at drive-ins but also to the tru trash-cinema fans who could appreciate his offbeat sensibilities. The plot is rather hoary, with a new inmate discovering the corruption of the prison setup, complete with a drugged-out psycho, a cellmate informer, and a guard who delights in torturing the women with poisonous snakes. The girls put their heads together and begin to devise a way out of their tropical hellhole, but not before disrobing several times and having a knock-down, drag-out fight in the muddy rice paddy where they’re forced to toil all day. The Big Doll House, like some of Hill’s other movies, was shot in the Philippines, with the cast and crew making up plot elements and dialogu in near-gurrilla filmmaking. Though the islands were a cheap place to produce movies in the ’70s, the working conditions were boot camp-like. Where The Big Doll House really succeeds is in its mix of titillation and action, a fast-paced combination that makes it one heck of a fun exploitation movie to watch. It’s also worth noting that this movie gave the great Pam Grier her first real starring role; she would become a Jack Hill regular before moving on to more substantial roles. –Jerry Renshaw

If, 18 years ago, you had told rapper Ice Cube he’d have a hit family movie called Are We There Yet?, he would have sneered in your face. Yet here he is with that movie’s sequl, Are We Done Yet?, in which Nick Persons (Cube, Barbershop, Friday) takes his new wife Suzanne (Nia Long, Big Momma’s House) and her two cantankerous kids out to an old house in the country. Unfortunately, the house proves to have a few problems, and Nick finds himself at the mercy of a real estate agent/contractor/house inspector/midwife Chuck (John C. McGinley, Scrubs), who before long is turning Nick’s house–and his life–inside out. The script for Are We Done Yet? is based on an classic (though little remembered) Cary Grant movie, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. While Cube doesn’t have Grant’s comic skills, he has grown into a comfortable and charming screen presence, and he gives this ramshackle entertainment a decent foundation. But it’s McGinley who steals the movie with his truly bizarre yet mesmerizing performance; aside from some pratfalls, Cube spends most of the movie staring in horror or astonishment at McGinley as the tall lanky white man walks a very fine line between comedy and schizophrenia. –Bret Fetzer
